Extension
Main Principles
The extension is executed by straightening the 1st finger, that way making space between 1st and 2nd finger
All the other fingers stay in their previous locations, including the thumb
Keep using the weight of the arm, hand and fingers to place the string on the fingerboard
Bb major scale
The topic of "Extension" we start with Bb major scale. Notice how this scale has 2 flats (B flat and E flat) and we start it with 2nd finger on the G string. You will need to use the extension two times in this scale. In the score the extension is marked with a line between fingers 1 and 2.

Eb major scale
This time we use the pattern from the previous scale and use it in Eb major scale. Extension is used two times.

Dotzauer no. 50
This piece gives a chance to work on the extension. It is also a good opportunity to play with your teacher or any other cellist in a duet (the second line in the score indicates the second voice). Let's play together!

The extension is usually quite heavy on the left hand, it takes some time to get used to it. Always take some time to relax the left hand after longer extension usage.
Now we are closing the gap between the 1st and 4th positions.
The next step is the 2nd position.
